The Royal Park, designed by Luigi Vanvitelli and finished by his son Carlo, was inspired by models of the grand European residences of the era. It stretches three kilometres long and covers 120 hectares, incorporating on the left the so-called Old Forest, part of a previous Renaissance garden belonging to the Acquaviva family, where the Castelluccia and the Peschiera can be found.
The via d'acqua water course, consisting of ponds and fountains, is fed by the Carolino aqueduct and is aligned on a south-north axis. The Margaret and Dolphin fountains are followed by four fountains inspired by legend: the Fountain of Aeolus, the Fountain of Ceres, the Fountain of Venus and Adonis, and the Fountain of Diana and Actaeon. The latter was inaugurated on 7 June 1749 and is located immediately after a magnificent artificial waterfall, the heart of the entire scenographic installation.
