Limatola Castle

Polyptych

The palatine church of the Limatola castle holds a polyptych depicting Madonna enthroned with Child, Saint John the Baptist and Saint Mary Magdalene, painted by Francesco da Tolentino in 1527. Around the altar, Stories of Jesus and Mary (Nativity, Resurrection, Ascension, Pentecost, Death and Assumption of the Virgin) are displayed. Commissioned by the Gambacorta-Della Ratta family, as is revealed by the coat of arms at the base of the Virgin's throne, the polyptych was intended to adorn the main altar of the Church of the Annunciation at Limatola, from where it was removed due to the difficulty of preserving the artefact in the building.
