Hardstone carving round table

Real Laboratorio delle pietre dure, Piano di tavolo, Caserta Palazzo Reale, sala dell'Inverno
The table top is made of semi-precious stones with two large agate ovals at the centre, surrounded by mosaic inserts depicting flowers, butterflies and other insects, on a base of similar stone. Along the circumference are oval medallions and circles of agate and amethyst surrounded by bands of petrified wood. The artefact, which was originally conceived as a semicircle and then transformed into a full table, was created according to a design by Giovanni Mugnai by the Royal Laboratory of Semi-Precious Stones in Naples.
