Pinacoteca

Fasti Farnesiani

Charles of Bourbon, born in 1716 from the second marriage of Philip V of Bourbon, King of Spain, to Elizabeth Farnese, Duchess of Parma, inherited, through his mother, the rich Farnese collection which he transferred from the Farnese residence to the confines of the Kingdom of Naples, which was conquered in 1734. The paintings displayed in these first rooms of the Pinacoteca, or picture gallery, are part of that inheritance: they comprise a cycle of battles fought by Alessandro Farnese (1545-1592) and paintings depicting the marriage of Elizabeth Farnese (1692-1766) to Philip V of Bourbon (1683-1746) by Pier Ilario Mercanti, known as Spolverini (1657-1734).
