Palatine Library

Book collection

The shelves of the Palatine Library hold around ten thousand volumes. Queen Maria Carolina (1752-1814) worked hard to ensure the palace was endowed with a rich library, whose collections were then gradually expanded both in Murat's era and in the years preceding the Unification of Italy. The section on the arts and humanities is one of the most comprehensive. The books on art include such noteworthy volumes as: Le Antichità di Ercolano Esposte (The Antiquities of Herculaneum Exposed), la Dichiarazione dei disegni del Real Palazzo di Caserta (The Declaration of the Plans of the Royal Palace of Caserta) by Luigi Vanvitelli, la Storia della scultura del Cicognara (The History of Cicognara Sculpture), and Les ruines de Pompei (The Ruins of Pompeii) by Mazois.
