Episodes of literary and art history

The themes addressed in the canvases on display can be linked to episodes of literary history, artistic historiography or classical mythology, with allegorical undertones.
One of the works that particularly stands out is that of Giotto and Cimabue, by the Neapolitan painter Tommaso de Vivo (1790-1884), which depicts the celebrated encounter between Cimabue, innovator of painting in the thirteenth century, and his younger pupil, Giotto di Bodone. The work is an expression of the Romantic culture that presents the artist as a naturally gifted and brilliant being and is an allegory for the patronage of the arts that was a feature of the Bourbon monarchy.
