Caserta Vecchia

Medieval village

The medieval village perfectly preserves its historic appeal, particularly evident along the narrow streets that wind their way over the hill. Among the houses of the gentry, characterised by splendid Durazzo-style doors, a particularly eye-catching example is the "casa delle bifore" (the house of the mullioned windows, also known as Casa Ferraiuolo). Close to the cathedral lies the gothic Church of the Annunciation. Just outside the centre, the ruins of the castle can be found, built in the eleventh century and then rebuilt in the fifteenth century for the marriage of Caterina Della Ratta and Cesare d'Aragona.
